A chat with Eddy Brimson
The comedian and Watford fan speaks to The Scarf My Father Wore ahead of his gig at Heatons Sports Club on Sunday night
Tuesday 30 May 2023
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and anyone else joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Tuesday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
How’s everyone feeling today? There seems to be a lot of pride and optimism knocking about, but Sunday still hurts at the moment, doesn’t it? On that note, I thought we’d stick our Carlisle match report to one side for another day or so, and bring in a comedian for today’s edition to help lift our spirits a little (although he’s not exactly on top of the world either after what happened at Wembley the day before our visit). I’m delighted to be joined by Eddy Brimson, who you can see live at Heatons Sports Club this Sunday.
Diamond geezer, Watford fan, and stalwart of British comedy, Eddy has many strings to his bow. As well as being a much in demand comedian, he has penned several books on his first love of football including Tear Gas and Ticket Touts and the Hooligan series (alongside brother Dougie).
Another diamond geezer is Paul Ballentyne, managing director of Odin Recruitment Group, and I’d like to say a big thank you to him for sponsoring today’s edition.

When you’re interviewing someone, they say you should always get them onside with your first question. So… how are you feeling about Luton going up to the Premier League?
I have no words.
Best memories as a Watford fan?
I went to my first Watford game in 1973 (I’m older than I look, apparently) which was a 0-0 draw at home to Bristol Rovers – I really should have taken that as a warning.
I was very lucky to see the golden years at Vicarage Road, from Division Four all the way up to finishing second in Division One, with an FA Cup final and our one and only season of European football as well.
I have to mention winning 4-0 at Luton too. We’d not beaten them for 10 years, so that was an incredible day, but it also meant I never had to step foot in that place ever again. I just needed to see us win there once.
And the worst?
Our current owners destroying everything that was built during those years.
Have you been to Edgeley Park before?
I have indeed. I was at the 2-2 draw with Chesterfield the season before last. Incredible support inside and out. The march from the shops up to the ground was something I'd never seen at an English football ground. Top fans.
You’ve performed in Stockport on a number of occasions. What do you make of the place?
Stockport is genuinely a great town to play. That said, I did stay in one of the worst "hotels" I've ever had the misfortune to experience, up by the garage on the road leading south out of the town. Proper shithole.
Favourite way of travelling to Stockport gigs – car or train?
Car. You never know, I might have to leave quickly…
County fans are still feeling a little bit miserable after the weekend. Do you promise to cheer them up if they come on Sunday?
Considering what happened in the Championship play-off final as well, I sympathise. We need to be there for each other.
What have been your best and worst moments on the stand-up circuit?
Best – My first headline slot at Camden Jongleurs when they were the places to play will forever stay with me.
Worst – A stag do trying to glass me at Edinburgh Jongleurs when they were slowly becoming the worst clubs to play.
The Royal Variety Performance, Live at the Apollo or 8 Out of 10 Cats. You can only choose one to appear on…
Listen, I've been ignored by all three, I'd take a slot on Criminals Caught on Camera if offered.
What are your thoughts on hats?
As a baldy I love hats.
Would you rather be too hot or too cold?
Too hot all day long. I’m convinced it’s the cold that will kill me. It stems from an away trip on a football special train to – of all places – Carlisle, on a Tuesday night. I was only wearing a T-shirt, we lost 1-0, and on the journey home I have never felt cold like it… and you haven’t met my last girlfriend. From that day on the cold has been my nemesis.
Eddy is on the bill at Heatons Sports Club this weekend, as part of The Heatons Comedy Evening, Stockport’s longest running comedy club on the first Sunday of every month. The show starts at 7.45pm. Tickets are £12 per person, or just £9.75 each for a group of four or more.
Are you looking for a new job?
ODIN Recruitment ensure all their candidates are matched to their dream job. What? No, that doesn’t mean they can get you a job as a left-sided defender for Stockport County, even if there is a vacancy following Chris Hussey’s departure.
You might need to be a little more realistic with your expectations, but if your dream job doesn’t involve becoming a professional footballer, it’s definitely worth getting in touch with ODIN if you’re looking for a new opportunity over the summer.
They will take time to understand your skills, career history and personal aspirations. Get in contact today and a member of their team will be in touch.

Chris Hussey, the 1,439th player to feature for County, announced last night that he would be leaving Edgeley Park this summer. After scoring the winner against the Hatters for Port Vale in the Papa John’s Trophy back in August, Chris joined County a couple of days later, making his debut in the 1-0 win at home to AFC Wimbledon on 3 September. His first goal for the club came that same month during the 3-2 defeat at Crawley, and he went on to score on two further occasions – the equaliser at Newport and the early opener at Charlton in the FA Cup. Having played a big part in helping County reach Wembley, I’m sure our readers and subscribers will join me in wishing Chris all the best for the future.
