Wednesday 30 November 2022

Dear County fans, Stopfordians, other football supporters, and anyone else joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Wednesday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore, as November comes to an end. December’s looking alright though isn’t it, with England’s round of 16 game, County’s televised FA Cup replay, and the small matter of Christmas to look forward to!

Before our Hartlepool build-up gets underway tomorrow, we’ve got something a little bit different for you today. Last week in Manchester, high-end retail company END hosted Spezial FC, a huge exhibition paying homage to Adidas. You don’t need me to tell you there’s been some iconic Adidas County kits over the years, so we thought we’d send one of our reporters to Circle Square on Oxford Road to take a few photos, and have a bit of a chat with. Only one man for the job, someone very partial to three stripes, Simon Calvert.

Today’s edition is sponsored by The Site Supply Company. A big thank you to Steve Cree. Check out hivis.net if you need any workwear or high visibility clothing, and get 10% off all orders with the code TSMFW.

Tomorrow sees the start of our December prize giveaway, with over 20 gifts up for grabs. Will you win a stunning A3 print of Paddy Madden from acclaimed Manchester artist and illustrator Stanley Chow? A portrait painting of a loved one worth £130? Or a vase to attach to your wall in the shape of a pair of boobs? Have a peruse of our Christmas Gift Guide for all the prizes we’re giving away in December. But don’t forget, you have to be a subscriber to win. Click the button below.

How many pairs of Adidas trainers have you got?

I’ve got about 25 pairs.

What’s your favourite Adidas item in your collection?

My white Stan Smiths and blue Gazelles.

What got you into Adidas in the first place?

My uncle had a brown Adidas sports bag, that I thought looked cool with the old original Adidas badge on it. I just loved the look of the three stripes on the boots and trainers. Plus, back in the early days of my blossoming love affair with the brand, there wasn't much competition. I just got hooked.

What was the best thing about the Adidas exhibition in Manchester?

The sheer amount of different trainers and boots on show, and picking out some that I've had over the years.

And the worst thing?

The rip-off price of the poor merchandise on sale.

What football boots did you wear in your playing days?

Mainly Adidas (cheap ones) until I reached the holy grail - my Adidas World Cups.

What’s your favourite Adidas County kit?

1996-97 blue and white, with the Rangers-style badge.

If you had the chance to release a new style of Adidas trainer, capturing the culture of County, what would you call them?

The Loyals or The Family.

What’s your worst clothing brand you wouldn’t be seen dead in?

Nike!

Matt Walker ‘eats’ the World Cup

🇪🇸 No 9 - Spain (La Plaza Spanish Tapas Bar) 🇪🇸

“Good atmosphere on the Portobello Road, helped by an easy 7-0 win and free-flowing rioja. Porky tapas highlights were cheeks, chorizo and ribs. Tortilla was as dodgy as Costa Rica's World Cup chances.”

One of my favourite football books is Matt Walker’s Europe United, in which the author and Fulham fan spends a whole season taking in a game in all 55 UEFA countries. Well he’s back with another fun challenge, to experience Qatar 2022 in restaurants and bars across London which represent all 32 competing nations. Matt has kindly allowed me to use his photos and I’ll bring you one each day, giving you a tasty flavour of the World Cup, in more ways than one.

Stockport photo of the day

Hardcastle Road, Edgeley

A sincere apology to readers, my Adobe Photoshop is playing up this morning, so I’ve been unable to remove the steaming pile of manure from Phil’s shirt. On a serious note though, a Stockport lad scoring at the World Cup, bit mad innit? Well done young Foden, and all the best for the remainder of the tournament.
