Accrington 1 County 3
An unbeaten September concludes with a first victory at Accy since our 2007-08 promotion campaign
Sunday 1 October 2023
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and any Accrington supporters joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Sunday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
Three cheers if you think Scott Lindsey should collect League Two’s manager of the month award for September. Hip hip…
Why are you not hooray-ing? It’s probably between Lindsey and Challinor – the only two managers to pick up 13 points during the month, both winning four games on the trot after the 3-3 draw at Edgeley Park – and if it means we avoid the manager of the month curse, I’d be happy for September’s award to end up in West Sussex rather than Cheshire. (Sorry, Dave!)
We’ve already had a wobble in August, we don’t need another one going into October – an October that’s starting to look rather appetising with games against 16th, 19th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd coming up. A very strong September has put us just three points behind the leaders. With home games against three teams in the bottom four coming up, you start to wonder where we could be by the end of this month. So yeah, if any big cheeses at The Football League are reading this, give it to Lindsey.
The latest victory in our four-game winning streak came yesterday at a rather wet and windy Wham Stadium, which Sandy McGregor casts his eye over for us.
Finally, a big thank you to Tom from Sitezo for sponsoring today’s edition. Give him a call on 07729 225170 or email enquiries@sitezo.co.uk to arrange a free no-obligation consultation if you’ve got a web design project you’d like to discuss.
Enjoy today’s issue.

Yesterday’s match in one word:
Sandy – Excellent.
Pre-match thoughts:
Sandy – Pretty positive. But there was that nagging doubt. After three good wins against more difficult sides, would be slip up against the 'easier' team?
Post-match thoughts:
Sandy — Job well done. Looking forward to Tuesday night.
Verdict on Accrington:
Sandy – Thought they struggled all over the pitch. It was only when we started throwing on subs that they came into the game.
Verdict on County:
Sandy – Thought we controlled the game very well.
Top Red:
Sandy – Couldn’t pick anyone.
Top Hatter:
Sandy – Any number of good performers all over the pitch. Tanto just ahead of Croasdale.
Atmosphere:
Sandy – I was in the corner next to the scoreboard. Considering the constant rain, no roof, and a lack of vocal home fans anywhere near us, I thought the County fans were in fine voice.
Hopes for the rest of the season:
Sandy – Automatic is minimum I’m hoping for. Ideally champions. I thought the bench today looked a bit weak. Imagine what it looks like when Wootton, Hippo, Camps, Byrne, Knoyle and Touray are fit…
The British Library receives a copy of every single book published in the UK. In the same fashion, Des Junior believes a detailed record of every County game should be preserved for the history books. So here’s the full story of our 3-1 victory at Accrington Stanley on Saturday 30 September 2023, as told from his County-related WhatsApp groups…
8.17am: First fucking bus of the day thanks to those cunts on the railways. Leaving home seven hours before kick-off for a game an hour away. Could fly to Dubai in the same time.
9.48am: You could walk to Accrington in less time.
3.04pm: This place is shoddy, very shoddy. Stay safe lads. Don’t be jumping around when we score.
3.12pm: Tantooooo! 1-0.
3.16pm: Collar makes it 2-0. Get in! Excellent from Sarcevic, and a taxi for their goalkeeper.
3.19pm: Jesus, I could have stopped that. Now even, and not 55 years ago.
3.30pm: Barry should have made it three but fucks up his volley.
3.31pm: He’s been told to miss a few so Villa won’t recall the loan.
4.01pm: Other than Barry not scoring a decent chance to put us three up and effectively end the game, no complaints from me about that first half. We've looked lively, stretched them, and created chances. We've not been troubled often defensively, look organised off the ball, and have pressed them well when they've had the ball.
4.08pm: Barry is waiting for late on in the game to score. The scout that Villa have sent to watch him will piss off home with 20 minutes to go, in order to miss the traffic, and won’t be able to properly report back other than to say he saw Barry miss a sitter.
4.18pm: Penalty to County. Barry spotting the ball…
4.19pm: …and scores!
4.26pm: Three points off the top. You'd have got decent odds on that being the case when Crawley went 3-2 up at EP four weeks ago. Some turnaround.
4.46pm: 3-1. Keep it calm lads.
4.58pm: A great win, and four on the spin. Excellent stuff.
4.59pm: County won, City lost, might buy a lottery ticket…
5.30pm: Wettest I have been at a football match in a very long time.
6.02pm: I know I might be a bit optimistic but I can see us getting to the end of November undefeated.
6.03pm: One game at a time, please.
2.15am: Left home at 8am for a game 35 miles away. Just back. Great days.
Today’s sponsor: Sitezo
Sitezo are very good at designing websites. Don’t just take my, or their, word for it. Have a look at the above review they’ve received following a recently completed project for Broadstone Mill Shopping Outlet.
The Heatons-based web design company were contacted to help them design a new website as part of a larger rebrand. Their old site was showing its age and was not performing well with regards to SEO or usability. Sitezo were brought in to address these problems.
Thanks to the SEO optimisations and dramatic speed increase, the new website ranks much higher on Google for various key search terms that the marketing team provided. This has led to an average of 3-4 times more daily traffic, greater brand awareness and ultimately more in-person visits and therefore increased revenue.
Sitezo offer a range of technical and design services which are tailored to your specific requirements.
