Accrington v County
The Hatters make the short trip to Accy for the first time since our Football League exit in 2010-11
Saturday 30 September 2023
NEXT HOME GAME: Forest Green – Tuesday 3 October, 7.45pm
NEXT AWAY GAME: Accrington – Today, 3pm
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and any Accrington supporters joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Saturday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
It’s not guaranteed, but a victory in east Lancashire this afternoon would almost certainly put County in the play-off places by 5pm, above our old friends Crewe or Wrexham, or even possibly both of them. Technically, we could end the day in the automatic promotion places, but that’s a pretty unlikely scenario. Let’s just take it one step at a time, eh.
Ian Brown, Paul Thompson and Jonathan Baker are all backing Dave Challinor’s men to make it four wins on the trot later today. With Stanley losing three of their four league games this month, and County on a high after the rout of Wrexham last week, I reckon an away win looks a decent bet this afternoon.
Finally, a big thank you to Por Vida Tattoo for sponsoring today’s edition. Give them a call on 07549 930069 or email contact@porvidatattoo.co.uk to discuss any forthcoming tattoo plans you might have.
COME ON COUNTY!
Des Junior
PS) Don’t forget to tune into The County Away Day Show with Geordie Hatter before you head over to Lancashire today. It’s live from 9.30am.
Des Junior loves writing about County. But he can never be arsed doing match previews. They’re a bit dull, aren’t they? Paddy Madden’s out for two games with an ingrown toenail…blah blah blah…tomorrow’s referee has handed out more cards than Moonpig…blah blah blah…County haven’t won at Birmingham since 1672.
Fortunately, he has a number of fellow County content creators to call upon. Here’s their thoughts, general chit-chat and score predictions, as County aim to complete an unbeaten September, which I don’t think any of us would have predicted after Mansfield away at the end of August.

In honour of our hosts this afternoon, what’s your favourite drink that contains milk?
Are you sure that this is all that’s required of me Des, have I missed something? Oh well, too late… my favourite drink with milk is coffee.
It will surprise readers to hear that I consider myself not to be a “coffee snob” but simply locked into a regime that sees bog standard Nescafe Original as a must (and absolutely no variant on that), even at the eye watering prices the supermarket banditry are currently charging for it.
So… hot water… coffee… milk… nothing else. Happiness. (I’m a simple soul.)

What’s your thoughts ahead of County’s trip to Accy this afternoon?
It’ll just have to be a quick score prediction I’m afraid, as I’m currently away with very limited signal. 3-1 County.

Just how good was last Saturday?
There's only one thing I like better than a 5-0 win, and that's a 5-0 win in front of a packed house, at your own ground, against your bitter and over-hyped rivals. That 5-0 is even better when it features a hat-trick from one of your favourite players, a mazily-dribbled solo stunner from another, and a coup-de-grace close range fifth, dispatched clinically and with glee by your veteran centre-forward in front of the home end at the very death. All played out in front of an away support compelled against their will to remain in the ground until the close of play, as they suffer the ignominy of being informed in rousingly belted out song by 5,000 voices that they “get battered everywhere they go”.
I also managed to get a chicken and ham pie on the concourse at half-time, and am pleased to report that it was delicious. So all in all, yes, I'd rate last Saturday firmly in the category of 'Quite Good'.
I'm joking of course. Along with the entire County Nation I'd rate the day as bloody amazing – unforgettable, even. Of course, it would be very County indeed for us to fall flat on our faces in the very next game, but I sense a steeliness, resolution and momentum about this squad that will keep the collective energy positive and robust over the coming weeks, as we target a promotion berth.
Consequently I can't see past the away win today, and forecast a 2-1 scoreline to send the massed ranks of travelling Hatters home happy from the Wham Stadium. Bring it on!
