AFC Wimbledon 1 County 2
A first defeat of the season for the Wombles, and a very important three points for the Hatters
Tuesday 12 September 2023
NEXT HOME GAME: Wrexham – Saturday 23 September, 3pm
NEXT AWAY GAME: MK Dons – Saturday 16 September, 3pm
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and any Wombles joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Tuesday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
Ray Armfield and Dan Levy reflect on Saturday’s game today, as County return from London with all three points, and hopefully a bit more confidence in the tank going into the next couple of games against teams currently in the play-offs.
A big thank you to Ben at GWG Property Solutions for sponsoring today’s edition. Give him a call on 0161 291 1134 for a free no obligation quote. The business provides everything from extensions and renovations through to structural changes and new builds.

Saturday’s match in one word:
Ray – Predictable. (We’ve still only won one home league game in 2023 – and that was on 28 January against yourselves.)
Dan – Relief.
Pre-match thoughts:
Ray – For the reason above, plus being without seven or eight first choice players, I wasn’t overly optimistic and even going in 1-0 up at half-time I’d have taken a draw. I’d tipped you as champions so also thought your faltering start would begin to improve.
Dan – Nervous. I thought we were going to get taught a lesson, particularly as we are short of uninjured players who left school before 2021.
Post-match thoughts:
Ray – Game of two halves. I felt we shaded the first half but you were clearly the better side after the break. Disappointed, but we’ll improve with our missing players back, so not pressing any panic buttons after a first league defeat of the season.
Dan – Really pleased. We looked finally like it might all have clicked, though there’s still lots to work on. We managed to turn this season’s habit of being good for 20 minutes and then going to pieces the other way round.
Verdict on Wimbledon:
Ray – Can do better and probably will. Encouraged by some late cameo performances by academy products Ethan Sutcliffe and Aron Sasu. You clearly did your homework on James Tilley and shackled him effectively.
Dan – I think they were missing Joe Lewis. They were nothing special.
Verdict on County:
Ray – Moments of danger in the first half but also moments of sloppiness at the back which we didn’t capitalise on. Second half, County passed the ball around well and opened us up a few times.
Dan – First 50 minutes, we looked relegation fodder. The attacks were pedestrian, and the goal we conceded was pathetic. The people I was with mentioned it was Ruskish. And then we worked out if we attack at pace we are really pretty good. Tanto’s run for the equaliser was awesome – he is super-rapid.
Top Womble:
Ray – Josh Davison. Always gives 100% effort and got a much-needed goal.
Dan – Davison I think.
Top Hatter:
Ray – Probably Fraser Horsfall at the back.
Dan – Tricky one. Tanto was fabulous, Louis Barry a future Premier League player, but I would hand it to MaSH. Did a great job in defence and resisted the temptation to be a winger.
Atmosphere:
Ray – It was too hot. I’d read somewhere you’d sold all your 1,200 allocation so a bit surprised when 647 was announced. Still a good turnout of course. We were a bit lethargic on and off the pitch.
Dan – Pretty annoying home fans. With their Womble pretending he is a drummer with a rubbish wheelie bin. Ho Ho. I really ought to like them on account of the history of the phoenix club – but it is hard to. Hilarious stewarding – we weren’t allowed to take pies into the seats. Apparently the law is no alcohol or eating in sight of the pitch. County fans noisy as ever.
Hopes for the rest of the season:
Ray — Top half finish. Top 10 would be great. Anything above that would be a real bonus.
Dan – That we kick on, like we did last year. Next task: defeating the club that shouldn’t exist.
