“Ben Garner is known for playing an attacking style of football and U’s fans are starving for some of that”
County face a Colchester side with a brand new manager in the dugout tomorrow, which we discuss with Views on the U’s host Max Harrington
Friday 10 March 2023
Dave Challinor has just been named Manager of the Month; tomorrow’s opponents have a new gaffer in charge; County have lost every game at Colchester’s new ground without scoring a goal.
If any regulars on the Fingerpost Flyer or Crofter Coaches are reading this, if a black cat crosses your path tomorrow morning, I’d consider telling your driver to make a U-turn at the next services. Because the bad omens are seriously stacking up ahead of Saturday’s long trip to Essex.
Having not scored for 12 hours between us, I’d put money on tomorrow’s game not finishing 0-0, as I feel something has to give. In fact, I’ll rule out a draw altogether, I just can’t work out which team will be celebrating by 5pm at this moment in time.
Ahead of County’s first trip to Colchester since November 2009, we’re joined today by Max Harrington from Views on the U’s for a pre-match chat.
Congratulations to Will Howells, who’s won a container of Happy-go-Lucky vitamins in today’s prize giveaway! Every single subscriber will win a prize at some point, so if you’ve not yet subscribed, make sure you do and you’ll receive a free gift in the post.
Finally, a huge thank you to Kingsway Carpets for sponsoring today’s edition. They’ve currently got clearance stock available in store, so if you need a new carpet at the moment, it’s definitely worth having a look.
Enjoy today’s issue.

We’ve not scored for five hours; you’ve not scored for seven. Should we all just sack the game off tomorrow?
If it wasn’t Ben Garner’s first game in charge I would agree to sack it off. We’re hoping with a whole week’s worth of training we might be a tiny bit easier on the eye this weekend. I’d say it’s a nailed on 0-0 draw but knowing how football works it will be 3-3!
What’s your thoughts on the appointment of Garner ahead of his first game in the dugout?
I’m really excited, you’ve only got to look at his record at Swindon to see what he can do in League Two. He’s known for playing an attacking style of football and U’s fans are starving for some of that.
Do you prefer Layer Road or your new place?
I’d have to say Layer Road but that’s because so many great memories were had there. Since moving to the new ground there hasn’t been much to shout about; we’re hoping that will change soon with Garner in charge.
You’re nine points above the relegation zone. Are you starting to feel safe?
I’d say a fairly nervous yes. We’re not fully safe yet but I only think another win or two is required. It also helps that Rochdale and Crawley look pretty awful.
What are your best and worst memories following Colchester?
The best is watching us finish 10th in the Championship. This was a while ago now but some of the greatest memories most U’s fans have seen.
Worst could arguably be the last few years back in League Two, seeing poor managers in charge, battling relegation and getting knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league teams. It’s not been pretty.
What are your thoughts on Stockport County?
All due respect, I don’t really know. Prior to this season, I think it was over a decade since we last played. Growing up, County were always a Football League club and we had plenty of games against each other. I guess thoughts will be formed over the next few years should we stay in the same league and play more games.
What's your prediction for tomorrow?
There’s going to be a lot of optimism on Saturday. I actually think it will be a good game, with County in the play-offs. I’m going to be positive and say a 2-1 win for Col U.
