NEXT HOME GAME: Forest Green – Tuesday 3 October, 7.45pm
NEXT AWAY GAME: Accrington – Saturday 30 September, 7.45pm
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and any Wrexham supporters brave enough to relive the weekend’s events, a very warm welcome to your Monday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
Do you know what, Wrexham are alright in my book. Considering they were absolutely twatted at Edgeley Park on Saturday, the vast majority of them have been extremely gracious in defeat over the weekend, such as their fanzine, with their witty riposte in reply to my amended version of the “Super Paul Mullin” chant.
Perhaps County v Wrexham isn’t a proper rivalry after all, as many have said, and dare I say it, there may even be a certain level of mutual respect between the two clubs. Two traditional Football League clubs, both with a decent hardcore fanbase, both suffering over a decade in non-league, both now looking forward to a much brighter future under new ownership. Gaz from Chips for a Quid wrote a quality article on the matter the other day (click here to read) and he joins us today to reflect on a scoreline nobody in football saw coming, along with Isaac Stronge from The Stopfordian Sport.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Paul and all the team at Colourtone for sponsoring today’s edition. See below for further details on what they have to offer.
Have a great week!

Saturday’s match in one word:
Isaac – Surprising.
Gaz – Assault.
Pre-match thoughts:
Isaac – In for a tough, hard-fought game but one that I really didn’t want us to lose.
Gaz – I was very confident given how we’d battered the Cods in our last game and came into this one unbeaten in seven. Thought we’d turned a corner. Shows how much I know. For the first 20 minutes we looked the better side. But from the moment you scored against the run of play, there was only one team ever going to win it.
Post-match thoughts:
Isaac – We’d started a small positive run before the game but this surely now gives us the confidence to go on and put a few more wins on the board. Most teams seem to have struggled to keep Wrexham at bay and we made them look average.
Gaz – That was one of the most abject performances I’ve seen us put in for many months. Some are saying it’s our worst showing ever under Parkinson. Our defence can’t handle pacy strikers and you put us to the sword. Something needs to change at the back.
Verdict on County:
Isaac – Incredible. Tanto has always looked like he has bags of potential and it’s so nice to see him finally realising it. Defenders just cannot cope with him. Same goes for Barry. I don’t envy Wootton trying to force his way back into this side.
Gaz – Excellent. You’re better than I thought. Lots of very talented players, especially up top. That Louie Barry goal was sensational.
Verdict on Wrexham:
Isaac – Very average, chasing shadows all afternoon. Elliot Lee looked like the only player to make something happen but even he seemed very frustrated towards the end. They seem able to score goals (apart from against us) but they need to sort that defence out. We looked like scoring every time we crossed the halfway line.
Gaz – Hopeless. That second goal was particularly embarrassing.
Top Hatter:
Isaac – Obvious answer but I have to give it to Tanto. Gives defenders nightmares.
Gaz – Few to choose from but gotta give it to Oloafe. He was a menace and never stopped running. Our back line simply couldn’t handle him.
Top Red Dragon:
Isaac – Elliot Lee.
Gaz — Urgh. Maybe Luke Young or Elliot Lee? They both tried to make something happen, at least.
Atmosphere:
Isaac – Bouncing all afternoon, made easier of course by the constant goals.
Gaz – Always a good atmo in these games. We were a bit shellshocked after rubbing our eyes and checking the scoreboard to confirm we were indeed 4-0 down after 50 minutes, but after accepting it was done and dusted there was nothing left to do but exit early or stay and sing. Most of us did the latter.
Hopes for the rest of the season:
Isaac – I’m sure Challinor will (rightly) be telling the players this is just one game, but that’s probably one of the most pressured games we’ll play this season and we took it in our stride. It has to give us the confidence to kick on and really cause this league some problems.
Gaz – I mean we’ve only lost twice so far this season, but that was a nasty one. Our defensive record is pretty shocking, so there needs to be some tweaking to the side ahead of our next fixture which is another very tough game against a good Crewe side. Shame about Saturday’s result, but it’s always good to visit Edgeley Park. Good luck for the rest of the season.
Give your car a lick of paint
Granted, Stockport used to be a little rough around the edges. But the town’s getting a good old lick of paint these days, with fancy new offices, apartments, bars and restaurants springing up. You can’t be driving up and down the A6 in a tatty car with chipped paintwork, so give your car a nice lick of paint too. Colourtone is your go-to company for that. They’ve been servicing the automotive and industrial markets in Cheshire and Greater Manchester for decades, and carry an extensive range of car paint and industrial paints.

Photo of the day
On the cesspit that is Twitter, or X, or whatever you want to call it these days, there’s some pretty abhorrent personal abuse chucked around on a daily basis. That needs wiping out, without a doubt. However, if you’re an American lady who posts a photo of herself crying ahead of her first ever Wrexham match in person, and that match subsequently ends in a 5-0 defeat, you’ve got to accept a little bit of ribbing…
