Sheffield Wednesday 1 County 1 (1-4 on pens)
A screamer from Paddy, but the Owls sneak into round two
Tuesday 15 August 2023
NEXT HOME GAME: Bradford – Today, 7.45pm
NEXT AWAY GAME: Mansfield – Saturday 26 August, 3pm
Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and any Wednesday supporters joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Tuesday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore.
We’ve had a few technical problems recently, but they should be sorted now, so hopefully we’re back to normal. Today we’re taking a look back at last week’s League Cup tie in South Yorkshire with County fan Chris Eaton and a Twitter account called SWFC Supporters Club, which isn’t the official SWFC Supporters Club, and is anonymous after they received death threats for taking the piss out of their rivals on the red side of the city. Crikey. If any Sheffield United fans are reading this, I bloody love a greasy chip butty. Can’t get enough of ‘em.
Today’s edition of The Scarf My Father Wore is sponsored by BGM Decorators. A big thank you to Ben. If you’re thinking of having any decorating work done over the coming weeks or months, please see below for further details.
Enjoy today’s issue.

Tuesday’s match in one word:
SWFC – Unjust (you deserved to win).
Chris – Heartbreaking.
Pre-match thoughts:
SWFC – Hoping for a confidence builder for our new players (many who started) after Friday’s one-sided encounter with Southampton.
Chris – I was just hoping that we’d turn up on the night, and perhaps nab a goal.
Post-match thoughts:
SWFC – While delighted with the win, I thought we played poorly. Especially in the first half when County didn't give us any time on the ball. We said at half-time there was no way County could keep up the pace they'd set.
Chris – I think there's a lot of positives to be taken. We played with a nice balance of controlled aggression and created a lot of meaningful attacks.
Verdict on Wednesday:
SWFC – Room for improvement.
Chris – They weren't at their best and it showed. I'm not sure whether the cause of their subdued display was them not turning up or us controlling them.
Verdict on County:
SWFC – I was really impressed. County demonstrated a style of play that it seems our new manager wants to introduce, but did it far more effectively than we did.
Chris – We played brilliantly. The only concern is that inability to hold firm when it's vital has shown up again. Pye, Wright, Collar, Lemonheigh-Evans, Johnson and Madden were all 8/10 or above.
Top Owl:
SWFC – Callum Paterson, by some distance. Caused County lots of problems when going forward.
Chris – Not really any standouts on an off day for the home side, although the class of Bannan told in the final 15 minutes.
Top Hatter:
SWFC – Olaofe. Star of the first half. Far better than anything we had up front on the night.
Chris – Ethan Pye. Although there were plenty to choose from, I think Ethan just edges it over the full match. He was immense, especially for a lad making only his 4th County appearance.
Atmosphere:
SWFC – The atmosphere was all about County. They were very loud on the night and the songs were great. Definitely enjoyed their trip.
Chris – Hillsborough is a great place to watch football, a proper English ground with a lot of history. That away end roof holds some noise in too. Our fans, as always, were superb.
Hopes for the rest of the season:
SWFC – It's far too early to get worried about our prospects for this season. There’s lots of new players to settle but hopefully we’ll find a good formula soon. It's been a very disruptive summer – new manager, huge changes in the squad, new style of play. Fingers crossed…
Chris – We have such a strong squad now, it'd be a failure if we didn't get into that top three. Having watched the opening two matches, I'd say I'm more positive about that than I was before the season.

Don’t be like this random stranger Des Junior found on the internet. He thought he could decorate his living room himself. But now look at him, sat forlorn on his floor covered in a tin of Dulux. His wife’s left him, and his evenings are now occupied by microwave meals and old repeats of The Sweeney. You know what he should have done, don’t you? He should have called BGM Decorators.
BGM Decorators is a family business that has been in the trade since 1988. They’ve been built on hard work, honesty, and a high quality service that has consistently enhanced their reputation. They provide a painting and decorating service on a domestic and commercial basis across Stockport, Greater Manchester and Cheshire, as well as offering tenant turnover services and working alongside estate agencies and private landlords.

He had a target of £1,000. What’s the current total? Over £7,000. A huge congratulations to Dave Thompson who’s absolutely smashed his fundraising target for the mental health charity Mentell, after completing his 24-hour boxing challenge yesterday. In terms of the challenge itself, as well as the amount of money raised, a truly phenomenal achievement. If you see Dave at EP tonight, shake the man’s hand, and for anyone who’d still like to donate, the link is below.
