The 12 Days of (County) Christmas!
Over the first 12 days of December, we’ve got lots of great prizes to give away, and some fantastic County memories to share
Thursday 1 December 2022
We’re into December, which means it’s time for The Scarf My Father Wore prize giveaway! Over the first 12 days of this month, I’ll be giving away some great prizes to our subscribers, and I thought I’d share some of my favourite festive County memories with you as well.
To give all subscribers a fair chance, each winner will be chosen by a random number generator, which you can watch live on Twitter (@countyscarf). Today’s winner will be chosen at around 9pm after tonight’s World Cup games, with a special bath bomb from Wicked Blessings up for grabs.
Today’s edition is sponsored by The Site Supply Company. A big thank you to Steve Cree. Check out hivis.net if you need any workwear or high visibility clothing, and get 10% off all orders with the code TSMFW.

🎶 And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
We’ve beat West Ham United
By two goals to one 🎶
I’ve got lots of fantastic County memories from festive seasons gone by, which I’ll share with you over the next couple of weeks, but there’s only one place to start for me: Wednesday 18 December 1996.
It was an exciting stage of my life anyway, as a 12-year-old coming to the end of my first term at Stockport Grammar (shit uniform I know, but I did quite enjoy the rest of the experience), but that excitement was constantly being heightened by County’s exploits. I’d already seen us win at Sheffield United and Blackburn, as well as witnessing Cavaco’s equaliser at Upton Park, thanks to half a day off school due to the most unlikely ‘doctor’s appointment’ in history. I say unlikely, because as I put my hand up to be excused halfway through my French lesson, the entire class, knowing exactly where I was heading with my dad parked outside, started cheering and wishing me luck. Even my French teacher had a rye smile on her face. Sorry, Miss. (Although I’ll never regret seeing that moment of Portuguese magic in London that night, and to this day I’ve never been stuck in France with no idea where the nearest swimming pool is.)
The replay just oozes County nostalgia, doesn’t it? The kit, the pitch, that team, everything. Julian Dicks headed the Hammers in front, but that own goal and a winner from Big Brett secured our place in the last eight. What a time to be alive.
I can’t promise such impressive segues with forthcoming memories and prizes, but I needed a good bath after the West Ham game after being covered - and I do mean covered - in mud from head to toe after invading the pitch at the end with everyone else. On that note, how would you like to win a bath bomb today! Seamless this stuff isn’t it?
Courtesy of Wicked Blessings, a food grade high quality bath bomb is the first prize we’re giving away this December. We’ll draw the winner live at 9pm.
If you’re still trying to think of nice ideas for a stocking filler, Wicked Blessings supply bad bath bombs for bad kings and queens. They have a special Christmas offer where you can buy three for £10, or spend £20 and receive a free £5-£10 prize, ranging from handmade lip balms, sugar scrubs and oils.

Matt Walker ‘eats’ the World Cup
🇨🇦 No 10 - Canada (The Maple Leaf Covent Garden) 🇨🇦
“This was a tricky one. Massive thanks to Canadian TV man Erik Janssen for putting 'Matt Walker from the Guardian' and 'Mischa Gulseven from the Swiss press' on the door. The match was a real heart-breaker, with Canada losing 1-0 to Belgium, but washed down my first poutine with Moosehead and Molson beers.”
One of my favourite football books is Matt Walker’s Europe United, in which the author and Fulham fan spends a whole season taking in a game in all 55 UEFA countries. Well he’s back with another fun challenge, to experience Qatar 2022 in restaurants and bars across London which represent all 32 competing nations. Matt has kindly allowed me to use his photos and I’ll bring you one each day, giving you a tasty flavour of the World Cup, in more ways than one.
