Dear County fans, Stopfordians, and anyone else joining us today, a very warm welcome to your Friday edition of The Scarf My Father Wore, as we introduce the first instalment of a brand new series!
“You never know what you're going to read on any given day.” That’s what Nick Lee said in November when I asked him to name his favourite thing about The Scarf My Father Wore.
I’ve mentioned before that our bread and butter is the match previews and match reports and away fan interviews and stuff like that. But as The Scarf My Father Wore is essentially a fanzine at heart, I like to pack lots of different weird and wonderful fillings within our bread and butter as well. And on that note, today’s edition is all about sandwiches. (County have got a blank weekend, I had to think of something.)
This new series isn’t just about sandwiches, by the way. This new series is going to focus on… well… literally anything in the whole world. I appreciate that’s a little vague, but going back to Nick’s answer, you’ll never know what’s going to be coming next with this one.
I’ve decided to broaden my horizons (and yours, too) by speaking to different Substack writers from across the globe, asking them questions about their own hobbies and interests and areas of expertise.
First up is Barry Enderwick from California, the man behind the popular Sandwiches of History. Barry picks up old sandwich recipe books and makes whatever’s inside, which can be anything from salmon butter and asparagus to peanut butter, lettuce and cottage cheese. Doesn’t the world feel slightly better now you know Barry exists, who might even be whacking some butter on a slice of bread as you’re reading this now.
Today’s edition is sponsored by BGM Decorators. A big thank you to Ben. If you’re thinking of having any decorating work done over the coming weeks or months, please see below for further details.
Finally, I’m currently walking every street in Stockport to raise money for mental health charity Mentell. If you’d like to make a donation to help me reach my target, please click here.
Total distance so far: 46.68 miles
Total steps so far: 83,302
Total raised so far: £1,037
Total completed streets so far: 24 (Click here for the full list, which includes reports and photos from every day of the walk.)
Further information on the walk can be found by clicking here.

Give us a brief history of your Substack.
I started my Substack as a way to consolidate what I was doing on Patreon and the weekly newsletter I was sending from Squarespace. This way I can have a free weekly recap email, and a paid tier that offers travel notes, behind the scenes stuff from writing my cookbook and more. The free email is weekly, the paid posts are sporadic but I try to do one or two a week.
What’s the best sandwich you’ve reviewed?
Oh man, that's a tough one. The classics like the Reuben or Kentucky Hot Brown are so good but then so too are the international ones like Pan Bagnat or Banh Mi. The one that does stick out is The Tomato from Turkey and the Wolf's cookbook Flavor Trippin' in New Orleans.
And the worst?
So many to choose from. Let’s go with the Yeast Sandwich. Fresh yeast cake mixed with Worcestershire sauce. Tangy wallpaper paste.
What do you like to get up to when you’re not making sandwiches?
I love cooking, running, golfing, and, if I'm near warmer water that isn't shark infested, body surfing.
A number of Stockport County fans like to take egg sandwiches on coaches to away games. What’s your thoughts on people who scoff egg butties on public transport, stinking the place out?
I’m against it. I mean, there could be extenuating circumstances where that is the only moment they have to sit and eat. But in general, be kind to your fellow passengers and leave those egg sandwiches in your bag.
You won’t have heard of any of these, but let’s imagine I’ve invited you over to Edgeley for a bite to eat. If you had to choose, would you go for a kebab from Mustaph’s, a fry-up from Sivori’s or fish and chips from The Friary?
I mean, the kebab is tempting. But there is no way I could resist the fish and chips. Especially if the name of the place is The Friary!
A couple of months ago, The Guardian published a feature on you and your sandwiches. How’s the reaction/impact been since then?
Overwhelmingly positive and massive. That piece drove a ton of attention and followers for sure. And it was such a nice, well-written piece too.
Can you give us a sneak preview to any sandwiches you’re going to be making over the next few weeks?
I usually plan out the sandwiches I’m going to make for the week on the weekend just before. I’m confident there will be chicken, tinned fish, and roast beef, though not in the same sandwich.
What sandwich do you think Donald Trump makes for his lunch?
None. That guy hasn't ever made a sandwich in his life. He has people for that. And in all likelihood it's a hamburger (which is a sandwich so...)
I love the fact you made yourself “The Moist Maker” from Friends. Firstly, how was it? And secondly, would you have reacted like Ross if I’d come over there and eaten it?
It was sooooo good! That is a delicious, gut-bomb of a sandwich. I did a recipe remix last year by making waffles out of stuffing, then using that as the bread. Highly recommend. As for acting like Ross, I would give it a go (but would have to watch him again for a refresher).
What’s the food scene like where you live in America?
The San Francisco Bay Area is wildly diverse and great when it comes to food. Authentic Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Middle Eastern… the list goes on. And there are Michelin starred restaurants if that's more one's speed.
How popular is Subway in the US?
It’s the number 8 chain by sales just below Burger King and just above Chipotle so I'd say pretty dang popular. It's not my cup of tea but clearly I am an outlier.
Have you ever visited the UK before? What was the food like, and did you have any sandwiches?
I have! I've been several times for work but I wasn't really sandwich or food focused on those trips. I'd love to come back and try lots of British things.

Don’t be like this random stranger Des Junior found on the internet. He thought he could decorate his living room himself. But now look at him, sat forlorn on his floor covered in a tin of Dulux. His wife’s left him, and his evenings are now occupied by microwave meals and old repeats of The Sweeney. You know what he should have done, don’t you? He should have called BGM Decorators.
BGM Decorators is a family business that has been in the trade since 1988. They’ve been built on hard work, honesty, and a high quality service that has consistently enhanced their reputation. They provide a painting and decorating service on a domestic and commercial basis across Stockport, Greater Manchester and Cheshire, as well as offering tenant turnover services and working alongside estate agencies and private landlords.

Photo of the day
Priestfield, Gillingham
Our very best wishes to Gillingham as they prepare for the biggest game in the club’s history this weekend, with Sheffield United travelling to Kent in the third round of the FA Cup.
I’ll certainly be purchasing one of their half-and-half scarves to commemorate such a historic occasion. I mean, it’s not like Gillingham v Sheffield United was a League One fixture as recently as 2016-17 is it…
Get in the bin, Gillingham.
