Des Junior
Des Junior loves writing about County. But he can never be arsed doing match previews. They’re a bit dull, aren’t they? Will Collar’s out for a month with diarrhoea… blah blah blah…tomorrow’s referee has handed out more cards than Moonpig…blah blah blah…County haven’t won at Birmingham for a thousand years.
Fortunately, he has a number of fellow County content creators to call upon. Here’s their thoughts, general chit-chat and score predictions, as County look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season last weekend.
Jimmy, The Scarf Bergara Wore
Barnsley 2 County 1
Is there any discussion to be had about Hinchliffe coming back into the team tonight?
I would stick with Addai for at least the first 10 games of the season. Ben wouldn’t have saved three of those four against Orient the way the defence parted, and I’m still not convinced that Addai had the angle on the second goal to turn it round the post as it was very close to his body.
I’m predicting Barnsley to nick it tonight. I think confidence is fragile now and we’re in for a bit of a rocky period.

Nick Lee, SK3 TV
Barnsley 2 County 2
We’re off to Barnsley tonight, where the classic film Kes was filmed. What’s your favourite type of bird?
Probably the ones who host stuff on telly and are basically lads with tits and that. Zoe Ball and Denise Van Outen, that sort of thing.
Oh, what? It's not 1997? In that case I'd probably have to go for Donald Duck, although I never understood why when he got out of the bath he'd have a towel round his waist despite never wearing trousers. It's one rule for animated ducks, one for the rest of us.
Nick’s one of the co-hosts of SK3 TV, a new podcast for the 2024-25 season, with live episodes every Monday at 8pm. Click here for links.
Ian Brown, All Things Stockport County
Barnsley 1 County 2
What went so badly wrong last Saturday?
Make no mistake, Richie Wellens’ Orient side handed County a lesson in soccer basics in securing their second win of the season last Saturday. The O’s were in no way flattered by the 4-1 result, looking very much in control for much of the game.
By contrast, County had manifold issues. In defence we were addicted to short passing across the back, constantly playing ourselves into trouble as a result. And I found the argument that there was “no one for our back line to pass to” a compelling one – there was simply little or no linkage twixt back line and midfield, added to which, when we did have the ball, the whole team seemed to have the greatest difficulty in retaining possession, frequently conceding free kicks that just racked up the pressure on our severely stretched defence.
How do we go about sorting matters? We don’t panic for starters, but whilst my recently adopted maxim “let the manager manage” still applies, I hope he puts more emphasis on using Tanto and Louie Barry as we did so successfully previously, with Fevrier and Diamond providing the width.
We’ll still lose a match or two but the above mentioned foursome, whilst taking the game to our opponents, will also hopefully ease the burden on the County rearguard. The judicious return of Lewis Bate to starting duties will also assist with that I’m sure.
On today’s prediction, I note that Davis Keillor-Dunn is a possible starter for Barnsley so I expect he’ll score, but so will County…
Ian follows County home and away, producing detailed match reports every week, along with lots of other great content. Head over to hedgegrower.blogspot.com.

#14 – Adam Hammill, Barnsley
Adam Hammill never found the back of the net for County (to be fair he only made five appearances in 2019-20) but he scored some important goals for today’s opponents, including a stunning strike in the 2015-16 League One play-off final at Wembley as the Tykes clinched promotion with a 3-1 win over Millwall.
